Here are a few helpful sites and bits of info. that Appalachian Wilderness Guides frequently use!

www.appalachiantrail.org/volunteer
- a page of the official website for the "daddy of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail" (drum roll please) ... the wonderful folks at the
APPALACHIAN TRAIL CONSERVANCY.

This page provides info. on ways to "Give Back to the Trail".

PLEASE DONATE / VOLUNTEER TO LEND A HAND IF YOU GET THE CHANCE!

www.nps.gov/features/wilderness/leavenotrace/popup.html - check out this great NATIONAL PARK SERVICE VIDEO ABOUT "LEAVE NO TRACE" OUTDOORS ETHICS !

www.howcast.com/videos/100020-How-To-Survive-a-Bear-Attack - a lot of humor with a bit of info; this animated piece shows some, but not all of "how to survive a bear attack".  Big item here:  waving your arms over your head to appear bigger, making a big noise, and fighting for all your worth is a good strategy if a black bear is starting to get aggressive.  If it's a brown (grizzly) bear - follow the animation.  If it's a polar bear -  really work hard on the "praying" part demonstrated in the video!
www.thecabininthewoods.com - Hikers!  If you wanna get off the trail for a night - or if you need a cabin near Fontana Lake as you start or end a hike - look here!  Phil Capper's cabins are reasonably priced, nice cabins on the southern border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  He also runs a shuttle - and he's dependable!  (He'll pick you up from the trail - and shuttle you from there to the cabin - and back !)
"BEST ALCOHOL STOVE":

Mr. Alex Barge (Trail-name="Shamrock") - has ingeniously redesigned and improved on the classic beer can stove!  With a little notice - he'll make you one of his "aluminum bottle stoves" - fairly inexpensively!
 E-mail "Shamrock" at:
firemedic4162@yahoo.com
www.glaciertrails.com - a site dedicated to displaying ONLY photos and live video of one of the most beautiful areas to hike in the world - the king of bear country, home of some of the last glaciers in America - an Appalachian Wilderness Guides and Backpacker Magazine favorite:  GLACIER NATIONAL PARK !
www.npca.org - a great site for the great folks at The National Parks Conservation Association.  Their mission: to protect and enhance America's national parks for present and future generations.  Check them out - you'll be glad you did!
